INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University men's basketball team came up short against Glenville State, 117-114, at the Walker Convocation Center on Thursday night. WVSU was within one point of tying the game with less than a minute to go, but couldn't find the game-winner.
The defeat drops the Yellow Jackets to 0-1 in the Mountain East Conference, while the win lifts the Pioneers to 1-0 in league play.
Six Yellow Jackets scored in double-figures on the night. Sophomore forward
Anthony Pittman registered his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 boards. Senior forward
Jeremiah Moore nearly claimed his first double-double of the year with 21 points and nine boards. Senior guard
Glen Abram led the team in scoring with 24 points. Sophomore guard
Treohn Watkins was one of the more efficient players on the court for WVSU with 18 points in 22 minutes. Fifth year man
Augustus Stone returned from a season-long hiatus and posted 19 points, while newcomer
Montrell Horsey opened his WVSU account with 10 points.
The first 20 minutes of the game was as close as they come. The Yellow Jackets were down by six points, 53-46, with under three minutes left in the first half and forced three turnovers in a minute-long span on a 7-1 run that tied the game at 53-all. The Pioneers made a late layup to go into halftime with the lead, 55-53.
The second half of the game was more of the same. Glenville State knocked down a three-point shot after six minutes expired to go ahead by nine points, 83-74. West Virginia State fought back valiantly on a 16-7 run that tied the game at 90-all around the midway point of the second stanza.
After a GSC layup with five minutes left on the clock, the Yellow Jackets were once again left with a nine-point deficit. This time, they responded with a 13-7 run that brought the game back to within one point, 113-112. However, the Pioneers converted the shots that they needed in the final minute to come away with the win.
GSC was somehow able to commit 33 personal fouls with only a single player fouling out. In the final seconds of the game, Glenville State's Hagel Augustin fouled out after accounting for 40 points. West Virginia State proved the more disciplined team at the end of the night with 22 personal fouls in comparison.
The Yellow Jackets hit the road for their next game at Concord on Sunday, Jan. 10. The tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.
