WVSU picks up fourth-straight victory at West Liberty, 83-61

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State University women's basketball team picked up its fourth-consecutive win at West Liberty on Wednesday night, 83-61.

WVSU jumps to 4-3 in the Mountain East Conference with the win, while WLU falls to 2-5 in the MEC with the loss.

Sophomore forward Destiny Fields led all players in scoring with a career-high 33 points. She added 11 rebounds to register a double-double. Freshman forward Shelby Harmeyer was also active on the boards with 10 rebounds. ZZ Russell and Kalia Cunningham both scored in double-digits with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Both teams struggled to light up the scoreboard in the opening five minutes. At the halfway point of the first quarter, the score was even at seven apiece.

The Yellow Jackets were able to inch ahead in the closing five minutes of the opening period. Chloe Cheresne drew a foul with three seconds remaining and converted both of her free throws to put West Virginia State up by four points, 19-15.

WVSU stayed a step ahead of West Liberty to start the second quarter. A pair of jumpers from Hannah Shriver and ZZ Russell increased West Virginia State's advantage to eight points after five minutes expired, 28-20.

The Yellow Jackets kept churning in the latter half of the second period. They went on an 11-3 run to close out the first half. Charity Shears grabbed an offensive rebound and banked a shot off the glass as time expired to give WVSU a 16-point lead at the break, 39-23.

The momentum carried over into the third quarter with the Yellow Jackets going on a 12-0 run in the first three minutes. WVSU picked up a 27-point lead at the conclusion of the shutout stretch, 50-23.

West Virginia State continued its dominance for the remainder of the third period. The Yellow Jackets held an impressive 34-point cushion going into the final period, 73-39.

The Hilltoppers finally found their footing in the fourth quarter and outscored WVSU, 23-12. The effort was futile, however, as West Virginia State did enough to still win by a comfortable 22-point margin.

West Liberty was forced into making 34 turnovers by the Yellow Jackets. WVSU committed 20 turnovers in comparison.

West Virginia State will come back home for its next game versus Wheeling on Saturday, Jan. 30. The tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
