BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State University women's basketball team picked up its second-consecutive road win at West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night, 103-68. The Yellow Jackets outscored their opponents in all four quarters.
WVSU leaps to 2-3 in the Mountain East Conference with the win, while WVWC falls to 0-5 with the loss.
Sophomore forward
Destiny Fields led the Yellow Jackets in both scoring and rebounding. Her 18 points and 10 boards were good enough for her second double-double of the season. Junior guard
Payton Shears was next best in scoring with 15 points, while freshman forward
ZZ Russell was next-in-line on the boards with nine rebounds.
Kalia Cunningham (13 pts),
Shelby Harmeyer (11 pts),
Alexis Hall (10 pts), and
Charity Shears (10 pts) all scored in double-digits.Â
Both teams struggled to make shots in the opening five minutes of the contest. West Virginia State gained a slight advantage by the end of the shaky stretch, 10-7.
Overall play improved during the next five minutes. WVSU went on a 10-4 run that was fueled by a pair of three-pointers from
Shelby Harmeyer to finish out the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets led by nine points at the conclusion of the opening period, 26-17.
West Virginia State started to roll in the second quarter. WVSU embarked on a 13-5 run after two minutes expired in the second period. The six-minute long stretch resulted in a significant 17-point lead for the Yellow Jackets, 43-26.
West Virginia Wesleyan was able to convert a couple of free throws and hit a jumper in the final two minutes of the first half to somewhat close the gap. Nevertheless, West Virginia State still carried a 13-point advantage into the break, 43-30.
Most of the third quarter was played evenly with each side trading baskets during the first eight minutes. The Shears sisters then created some separation with back-to-back treys from Payton and Charity. Fields then orchestrated a three-point play before the Bobcats could finally respond with a layup off the glass. WVSU was ahead by 20 points going into the fourth quarter, 67-47.
West Virginia State refused to give West Virginia Wesleyan an opportunity to come back in the final period. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Bobcats, 36-21,in the last ten minutes to come away with another convincing victory on the road.
WVSU shot 42 percent from the floor and outrebounded WVWC, 55-43. As a team, West Virginia State came up with 23 steals and caused an additional five turnovers.
The Yellow Jackets return to Institute for their next game against Davis & Elkins on Saturday, Jan. 23. The tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
