Yellow Jackets finish strong in win over West Virginia Wesleyan, 94-89

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State University men's basketball team came away with another hard-fought road victory at West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night, 94-89. Senior forward Jeremiah Moore joined the 1,000-point club at West Virginia State in the process.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 4-1 in the Mountain East Conference following their fourth-straight win. Meanwhile, the Bobcats drop to 0-5 in the MEC with the defeat.

Senior guard Glen Abram led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 21 points while dishing out eight assists. Fellow senior Jeremiah Moore was on the verge of a double-double with 19 points and eight boards. Sophomore forward Anthony Pittman did in fact register his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Fifth-year guard Augustus Stone was also in the scoring mix with 18 points.

The first seven minutes of the game was played to an even split, 14-14. The Yellow Jackets then scored six unanswered points in one minute thanks to two layups from Savion Marshall-Hamilton and a put-back dunk by Jeremiah Moore, 20-14.

The quick six-point swing was soon cancelled out by a 10-4 run by West Virginia Wesleyan. The contest once again came to a deadlock with nine minutes remaining in the first half, 24-24.

The Bobcats pulled ahead by five points at the five-minute mark in the opening half. Glen Abram then made sure that the two-possession lead didn't last long by knocking down a shot from beyond the arc. Augustus Stone added a layup on the heels of a steal by Marshall-Hamilton to even the score again, 33-33.

The game continued to follow a back-and-forth pattern for the next three minutes. In the final 60 seconds, West Virginia State's focus slipped allowing the Bobcats to go in front before the halftime buzzer. The Yellow Jackets went into the locker room down by five, 47-42.

Three minutes into the second half, the contest was tied up all over again at 52-apiece. Anthony Pittman made the Bobcats pay for a turnover with a jumper that found the back of the net to tie it back up.

The Yellow Jackets fell behind by as much as seven points over the next five minutes. Abram then took over by draining a three and pulling off multiple three-point plays on an 11-2 WVSU run. West Virginia State was suddenly back on top around the midway point of the second half, 70-68.

From the nine-minute mark until the five-minute mark of the second half, the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-4 run to tip the scales in their favor. West Virginia State was left with a seven-point lead to defend at the end of the stretch, 84-77.

WVSU successfully fended off West Virginia Wesleyan in the last five minutes of the contest. Jeremiah Moore eclipsed the 1,000-point career mark with a layup in the final minute that put his team up by nine points, 93-84. The Bobcats sank a few shots from the charity stripe in the final seconds to make the game seem closer than it was in the end.

Two players did the majority of the scoring for the Bobcats in Jaylin Reed (33 pts.) and Daylin Lee (20 pts.). On the other hand, five players from West Virginia State scored in double-figures.

WVSU will return home for its next game versus Davis & Elkins (2-3) on Saturday, Jan. 23. The tip is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
