BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- The Yellow Jacket Nation showed its clout last week by voting for
Zach Pate's somersault two-point conversion in an online poll. The overwhelming support of the WVSU fanbase helped to get the play selected as the 2019-20 Mountain East Conference Play of the Year when the league offices made the announcement on Monday afternoon. The play was viewed over 5,600 times on various social media platforms and led all other plays in social media engagement (likes, retweets, views, comments, etc.).
The MEC Play of the Year was selected by a combination of a fan vote conducted via social media, conference administrators and the league office. Each of the 12 member institutions of the Mountain East Conference submitted a highlight clip of its Play of the Year to be voted against.Â
Pate's acrobatic somersault over three defenders into the end zone occurred on the first drive of the 2019 season in a thrilling 20-17 victory over Frostburg State.
Dant'e Jones rushed 19 yards for the first score of many for the Yellow Jackets this past season to set up the trick play.Â
The offensive unit all lined up outside the left hash except for the center, Pate, and one wideout. Pate took the snap and ran to his right only to be met by a convergence of three Bobcats. Instead of trying to barrel through the crowd of defenders, the 5-8 slot receiver leaped into the air and flipped over them. To top it all off, he landed perfectly on both feet to secure the two-point conversion.
