INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University men's basketball team confidently defeated Davis & Elkins, 90-73, at the Walker Convocation Center on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets shared the wealth with four players reaching double figures in scoring.
West Virginia State (9-3, 4-3 MEC) currently sits in fifth place in the Mountain East Conference standings following the win. On the other hand, Davis & Elkins (4-9, 2-5 MEC) now sits in tenth place in the league standings after the loss.
Senior guard
Michal Seals once again led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 17 points. He made three shots from behind the arc and dished out four assists in another quality effort.
Jeremiah Moore and
Anthony Pittman posted 13 points in the game. Pittman added seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Meanwhile, Moore grabbed five boards.
Frank Agyemang rounded out West Virginia's top performers by recording 12 points and eight rebounds.
Ten minutes into the first half, the score was tied up at 20-all as shots were matched by both sides. The Yellow Jackets gained some momentum in the final four minutes of the opening period when
Glen Abram knocked down a three-pointer to start off a 12-0 run.
Anthony Pittman came up with a steal and fed the ball to
Frank Agyemang for a fast break dunk to supercharge the run on the next possession. At the end of the first half, WVSU led by seven points, 46-39.
After seven minutes of play in the second half, West Virginia State created a 20-point cushion, 65-45, as the Senators lagged behind. At that point in the contest, there was no doubt that WVSU would pick up its ninth win of the season. The closest that D&E got to sealing the gap in the next 13 minutes was with a layup in the last minute of the game that cut the deficit to 17 points.
Davis & Elkins simply couldn't keep up with the fast-paced style of play enacted by the Yellow Jackets. WVSU scored 25 points off turnovers and registered 19 fast break points by keeping constant pressure on the opposing team.
West Virginia State travels to West Virginia Wesleyan (5-8, 4-3 MEC) next on Saturday, Jan. 11 for an important MEC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
