BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team traveled to West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon and came away with its second win in a row, 93-84.
Charity Shears made headlines by breaking the Mountain East Conference (MEC) and school records for three-point field goals made in a single game with 12.
West Virginia State improves to 6-8 overall and an even 4-4 in the MEC with the win. Meanwhile, West Virginia Wesleyan drops to 3-11 on the season and 1-7 in league play with the loss.
Sophomore guard
Charity Shears led all players in scoring with a career-high 38 points. She connected on a record-setting 12 three-point attempts and made two free-throw attempts to reach her career-best points total. Freshman guard
Hannah Shriver also had a career day with a season-high 22 points in just 17 minutes played. She added five rebounds and three assists to round out her performance.
The first half was all about
Charity Shears pulling up from behind the arc. She warmed up in the first quarter by making 4-of-7 three-pointers to keep her team in the game. At the end of the first period, the Yellow Jackets trailed by three points, 20-17.
In the second quarter,
Charity Shears improved on her sharp-shooting by knocking down 5-of-6 shots from downtown. During a two-minute stretch at the beginning of the second period, she drained four consecutive three-point shots without an answer from the Bobcats.
West Virginia State ended up outscoring West Virginia Wesleyan, 26-9, in the second quarter to take a sizable lead into halftime. At the break, WVSU led WVWC by 14 points, 43-29.
The third quarter went West Virginia Wesleyan's way as the Bobcats outscored the Yellow Jackets, 31-16. WVWC effectively neutralized
Charity Shears in the third period to regain the momentum. Going into the final period, WVSU was down by one point, 60-59.
Charity Shears hit her tenth three-point field goal with 8:29 remaining in the contest to break the school and conference records that she previously set. She added two more three-pointers later in the fourth quarter to cement the new record.
Hannah Shriver stepped up in the final ten minutes and scored 13 points to make sure that the Yellow Jackets got the win.
Payton Shears also contributed to the victory by converting a shot from distance with 1:27 left in the game to put WVSU up by six points, 88-82. The Bobcats were unable to respond in the last minute thanks to a steal by
Charity Shears that thwarted any chance of late-game heroics by WVWC.
The Yellow Jackets achieved victory with accuracy from three-point range (47 percent) and from the foul line (75 percent). Comparatively, the Bobcats shot 40 percent from three-point range and 59 percent from the foul line.
West Virginia State remains on the road for its next game at Notre Dame (Ohio) on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
