Volleyball trounces Central State in three straight sets, 3-0

INSTITUTE, W.Va. ­– The West Virginia State University volleyball team defeated Central State in three consecutive sets (25-8, 25-11, 25-16) on Tuesday night at the Walker Convocation Center.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 3-6 overall with the win, while the Marauders drop to 2-7 on the season with the loss.

Sophomore outside hitter Jenna Dufresne recorded a team-high eight kills to go along with seven digs and a .429 hitting percentage. Fellow sophomore outside hitter Gabrielle Bullock posted a game-high 10.5 points with five kills, four service aces, and three block assists. Sophomore outside hitter J'Lana Stone played well, tallying seven kills with a .385 hitting percentage.

Central State's Deja Clark led her team with nine kills and 10 points.

The first set was never even close with the Yellow Jackets jumping out to a 12-2 lead. They went up by as much as 18 points, 23-5, before a block by Gabrielle Thompson and Grace Martin brought the first set to an end.

The second set started out with each team trading points until West Virginia State went on a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach for the Marauders, 13-5. WVSU only allowed six more points for the remainder of the set to take it by a final of 25-11.

The third set saw the best effort from CSU. The Marauders managed to stay level with the Yellow Jackets until the score reached 12 all. Once again, WVSU pulled away and won the decisive set of the match 25-16.

West Virginia State registered a .298 hitting percentage during the match, compared to a -.094 hitting percentage by Central State. Additionally, the Yellow Jackets recorded 20 more kills than the Marauders as a team.

WVSU will travel to Union University (Tenn.) for the UU Awesome Tournament next. The tournament will take place Friday, Sep. 20 and Saturday, Sep. 21.
