Institute, W.Va. – West Virginia State University was looking to knock off a second straight regionally ranked opponent on Saturday, March 2, 2019. The Jackets defeated 8th ranked Concord on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 spoiling the Mountain Lions Senior Day. State was trying to make it two in a row when 7th ranked University of Charleston came to campus to end the Mountain East regular season Saturday, March 2, 2019.
WVSU came out hot early, hitting 4 of 7 three pointers, to lead 18-11 after the 1st period. The veteran UC team would out score the State 28-13 to lead 39-31 at half. The Jackets would get as close as five points at 75-70 on two free throws by
Sierra Womack with 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Charity Shears led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points and former St. Albans graduate
Allison Johnson scored a career-high 13 points off the bench.
WVSU (7-21 overall and 6-16 in league play) will next play in the
MEC Tournament next week in Wheeling, W.Va. The Yellow Jackets will be the No. 9 seed and play No. 8 seed Shepherd next Wednesday, March 16, 2019, at 2:15 p.m.
