West Virginia State University was looking to be up for the challenge when the second ranked Hilltoppers came to Institute, WV for a Mountain East Conference match-up Thursday, February 14, 2019. The Yellow Jackets were within one point at 25-24 with 11:51 left in the first half when West Liberty went on a 10-0 run to take an 11-point lead. The Yellow Jackets just couldn't keep pace with West Liberty University falling by a score of 131-100 in front of 430 fans at the Walker Convocation Center.

WVSU is now 12-11 overall and 9-8 in league play, was lead by Augustus "Gus" Stone poured in 25 points, followed , Glen Abram scored 17 points, by Pat Johnson-Agwu had a double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds) and Ernest Jenkins with 10 points. The Yellow Jackets travel to Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday, February 16, 2019 for a 4:00 PM tip with the Cardinals
