INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University men's basketball team definitively defeated Frostburg State, 103-80, in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) matchup on Wednesday night at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets maintained their lead for 39 minutes and 12 seconds.
West Virginia State leaps to 5-1 on the season, 2-1 in the MEC with the win. Meanwhile, Frostburg State falls to 2-5 overall, 1-2 in the league with the loss.
Junior guard
Glen Abram posted a game-high 24 points in the contest. He shot 9-of-13 (69 percent) from the field and converted on two three-pointers. Freshman forward
Anthony Pittman recorded his second double-double of the season by grabbing a game-high 17 boards alongside 13 points. He is averaging 9.8 rebounds and 12.8 points so far this season. Senior guard
Michal Seals had his best performance of the year with 19 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and two steals.
The Bobcats seized a 2-1 lead and held it for 20 seconds in the opening two minutes of the game. That was the only moment in which they were ahead of the Yellow Jackets. West Virginia State picked up its play as the first half resumed and went up by as much as 18 points, 42-24, with three minutes left in the opening period. The Yellow Jackets entered halftime up 49-35 after shooting 53 percent from the field.
West Virginia State continued its dominance in the second half. The Yellow Jackets shot over 50 percent from the field again and outrebounded the Bobcats, 28-22. When Abram banked a layup in the final minute of the contest, West Virginia State claimed a 23-point margin of victory over Frostburg State in the teams' first-ever meeting.
WVSU shot 52 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range, compared to 31 percent from inside the arc and 29 percent from distance by FSU. Furthermore, the Yellow Jackets grabbed 45 defensive boards in comparison to 29 by the Bobcats.
West Virginia State will remain at home for another MEC clash on Saturday, Dec. 7 against Fairmont State. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
