West Virginia State scores at will in big win over Kentucky Christian, 133-99

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University men's basketball team put on an offensive clinic at the Walker Convocation Center on Tuesday night and defeated Kentucky Christian handily, 133-99. The 133 points scored by the Yellow Jackets set a new school record for most points scored in a single game. The record-breaking points total surpassed the previous school record of 130 points scored against Ohio Southern in 2000.

West Virginia State improves to 7-3 overall and remains at 3-3 in the Mountain East Conference after the non-conference victory. Meanwhile, Kentucky Christian falls to 3-14 on the season and stays at 3-8 in league play with the loss.

Senior guard Michal Seals led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 25 points and nearly reached a double-double by dishing out nine assists. He also managed six rebounds and three steals. Freshman forward Anthony Pittman nearly reached double-double figures himself by posting 22 points alongside nine rebounds. Glen Abram and Jeremiah Moore rounded out the top scorers for WVSU with 20 and 19 points, respectively.

West Virginia State was always in control of the game and actually never gave up the lead throughout the contest. The Knights managed to hang with the Yellow Jackets for the opening 15 minutes of the contest. With just under five minutes remaining in the first half, Kentucky Christian trailed by just nine points, 46-37.

In the final five minutes of the opening half, WVSU fired up the pistons and erupted on a 17-7 run. The first half finale from the Yellow Jackets gave them a 19-point lead, 63-44, going into the break.

On pace to score 126 points at the half, West Virginia State didn't seem likely to repeat its first half points total. On the contrary, the Yellow Jackets put the pedal to the metal and exceeded their first half scoring rate by posting 70 points in the second half.

Both teams disregarded defensive play in favor of an all-out scoring fest in the final period. There were 80 total shots taken in the second half alone.

With under three minutes left, Jamison Hunt turned a layup into a three-point play to get WVSU to 126 points. Dylan Ali then grabbed his own rebound twice and finished to reach 128 points. To break the record, Neil Higgins pulled up from behind the arc and drained the shot to put West Virginia State's points total at 131. To set the new record, Alex Osburn drove in the lane and made a layup that meant 133 points would be the new benchmark at WVSU.

The Yellow Jackets scored 41 points off turnovers compared to 14 by the Knights. Additionally, West Virginia State outrebounded Kentucky Christian, 40-27.

WVSU will play one more game before the holiday break on Friday, Dec. 20 versus Bluefield State. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in Institute.
