West Virginia State suffers first defeat of season to Glenville State, 127-115

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University men's basketball team started strong, but were outlasted by Glenville State on Saturday afternoon, 127-115. The game marked the start of league play for both sides.

West Virginia State falls to 3-1 overall, 0-1 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) with the loss. Meanwhile, Glenville State improves to 4-0 on the season, 1-0 in the MEC with the win.

First-year guard Treohn Watkins and fourth-year guard Isaiah Noel each posted a season-high 21 points to lead the Yellow Jackets in scoring. Junior forward Jeremiah Moore came up just short of a double-double with nine rebounds (eight defensive boards) and 10 points.

The Yellow Jackets held the lead for the opening 11-minutes of the contest. They went up by as much as eight points during that stretch, 28-20, before Glenville State made its push. The Pioneers took the lead for the first time with 8:11 left in the first period and didn't give it up for the remainder of the half. West Virginia State went into halftime with an 18-point deficit, 70-52.

Ten Yellow Jackets put points on the board in the opening half. On the other side of the court, scoring was primarily done by two players. Glenville State's Noah Frampton and Phil Bledsoe each hit five shots from three-point range.

West Virginia State won the second half, 63-57, but couldn't surmount the first half lead established by the Pioneers. Watkins converted on five three-point attempts in the closing period. The Yellow Jackets were without a three-point field goal made in the entire first half.

The significant difference in the game was accuracy from three-point range. West Virginia State made six of its 26 three-point field goals, while Glenville State drained 17-of-39 shots from downtown. The Yellow Jackets did outrebound the Pioneers, 50-43.

West Virginia State returns home for another MEC clash against Concord on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
