BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University men's basketball team captured its third consecutive victory at Bluefield State on Tuesday night. Five Yellow Jackets scored in double-figures to ensure that WVSU remained undefeated this season.
West Virginia State jumps to 3-0 overall with another non-conference win. Meanwhile, Bluefield State falls to 2-3 on the season with the loss.
Junior forward
Jeremiah Moore nearly registered a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Redshirt freshman forward
Anthony Pittman also approached double-double numbers with 11 points and eight boards. Both
Glen Abram and
John Dawson picked up 18 points to lead the Yellow Jackets in scoring. Senior guard
Michal Seals was the mainstay on the court for West Virginia State with 37 minutes played. He put up 13 points to go along with three assists and three defensive rebounds.
The first half was neck-and-neck with neither team really being able to gain a significant lead over the other. Â Dawson proved to be critical coming off the bench for the Yellow Jackets. He shot 5-of-6 from the field and 4-of-5 from three-point range in his 12 minutes played. He also made both of his free throw attempts in the first period to tally 16 points. With five seconds remaining in the opening half, Dawson drained a shot from beyond the arc to place WVSU ahead, 47-40.
The Yellow Jackets were able to pull away from the Big Blues in the second half. West Virginia State gained a 16-point advantage, 70-54, when
Anthony Pittman slammed a dunk around the 12-minute mark.
The Big Blues then clawed their way back into the contest, getting within two points of tying it, 86-84, with less than three minutes left in the game. However, the Yellow Jackets were better on the boards and hit more shots in the last two minutes to keep their lead until the final buzzer.
West Virginia State posted a 29.2 three-point field goal percentage compared to a 6.3 three-point field goal percentage by Bluefield State.
The Yellow Jackets remain on the road for their next game at Glenville State on Saturday, Nov. 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
