Yellow Jackets Host UVa-Wise in Home Opener
The West Virginia State football team hosts the University of Virginia College at Wise at noon Saturday in the Yellow Jackets' home opener.

Both squads are coming off of disappointing season opening losses as WVSU lost 35-31 at Charleston and the Cavaliers fell 17-7 at home against Glenville State.

This will mark possibly the last meeting between the programs as UVa-Wise will be leaving the Mountain East Conference at the conclusion of this school year.

The Cavaliers lead the series 3-1 with last year's 10-point win in Wise the largest margin of victory for either team.

The last time the teams met in Institute WVSU drove 75 yards in nine plays to take a 37-36 lead with just 25 seconds remaining. But Wise returned the favor by going 70 yards in just four plays over 19 seconds and hitting a game-winning 28-yard field goal at the horn.

Last year four turnovers doomed the Yellow Jackets to a 34-24 loss on the road.

Calil Wilkins had a huge game with 201 yards on 23 carries.

The sophomore does not look to have missed a beat since then going for 138 yards on the ground and 39 more through the air against the Golden Eagles.

Against the Pioneers Wise allowed just 61 passing yards but gave up 161 on the ground.

WVSU starting quarterback Austin Hensley will be a game time decision after being injured on the next-to-last series against Charleston.

If he cannot go then graduate student Faustino Saucedo will likely get the start.

Saucedo is a transfer grad student from Pace where he started six games in 2016.

Senior Tyrell Henderson caught nine passes for 142 yards last week, all in the first half. Junior Zach Pate caught seven for 85.

UVa-Wise returns junior quarterback Brycen Lee who ended up 15-of-31 for 162 yards against Glenville.

Lee went 15-25 for 251 with two touchdowns in last year's meeting between the teams.
