Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Team Making Its Move

West Virginia State University volleyball coach Kris Kern was obviously unhappy with the way his team was playing during the opening set Friday night against West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Yellow Jackets had lost both meetings between the teams last season, Kern's first with WVSU, but he thought going into the contest that his squad was ready to turn that around.
So what he was watching was not what he expected.
But the Yellow Jackets found their fire in the second set and rolled to a 3-1 win, the program's first over the Bobcats since September of 2016, and then followed that up by steamrolling visiting Glenville State 3-0 Saturday.
Those wins move the Jackets' record to 14-5 overall and 3-1 in Mountain East Conference action.
A 7-0 run midway through the second set Friday night got things rolling. Trinity Miller served all seven while J'Lana Stone knocked down three kills and Gabrielle Bullock two during that stretch.
"J'Lana Stone was outstanding in her first extended play," Kern said. "Combined with Gabrielle Thompson our middle play was intimidating."
That turned a 6-4 lead into a 13-4 advantage and the visitors never really recovered.
    WVSU won the match 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, and 25-10.
Stone and Bullock finished with 12 kills each and Devon Putnam 10. Tabi Pontious recorded 40 assists. Bullock also contributed 16 digs while Grace Martin came up with 15.
"Offensively Tabi Pontious moved the ball around and Devon Putnam, Gabrielle Bullock, and Jenna DuFresne were powerful," Kern said. "And Grace Martin has her best weekend as a Jacket."
That momentum carried over to Saturday when the Yellow Jackets rolled through three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-23.
Putnam and Bullock each picked up nine kills and Pontious had 36 assists. Emelia Fetch paced the defense with 14 digs.
The Yellow Jackets overcame being a couple of players down.
"With two of our top passers out with injuries Emma Fetch and Brianna Brandt had stellar weekends," Kern said.
WVSU returns to the court Wednesday when the Jackets host Bluefield State at 4 p.m. and Kentucky Christian at 7 p.m. before returning to MEC play Friday at 7 p.m. at Shepherd and Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fairmont State.
