Backed by a near perfect defensive effort in the field Yellow Jacket pitchers held visiting Alderson Broaddus scoreless for Sunday in sweeping a doubleheader 1-0 and 8-0 to improve to 9-4 on the season.
Danielle Lebsock's two out single to left drove in
Brookelyn Hale in the bottom of the sixth to account for the game's only run and
Emily Thompson threw a complete game shutout in the opener.
"Alderson Broaddus' pitcher kept us off balance but our defense stayed strong," WVSU Head Coach
Mattie Best said. "(Centerfielder)
Brookelyn Hale threw out their runner at the plate to save the shutout."
Hale had two hits for WVSU.
Freshman
Emily Moore only had to throw six innings to get her shutout in game two thanks to teammate
Alliyah Pullins.
Madison Rafuson delivered a two out single in the bottom of the sixth with WVSU up 6-0. Pullins then belted a home run over the left field fence to give the Yellow Jackets the "Mercy Rule" win.
Rafuson and
Micca Mirabella had three hits each and Moore drove in a pair to help WVSU build its lead.
"Defense once again shut them down when called on," Best said. "Offensively the one through nine hitters contributed to the win but Pullins stepped up big time."
The Yellow Jackets had just one, meaningless, error on the day.
Next up WVSU plays in the Shaw Invitational starting Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina.
