The Yellow Jacket softball team traveled to UVa-Wise Thursday and came home with a doubleheader sweep.
WVSU took the opener 7-0 with
Emily Thompson turning in an outstanding performance in the circle.
The junior from Wayne, West Virginia, allowed just two hits while going the distance while striking out seven and walking just one.
Brookelyn Hale drove in the first run of the day, the only run WVSU would need in the game, with a one-out double in the fourth.
"The girls stuck to the game plan and knew we had to execute," WVSU Head Coach
Mattie Best said.
The Jackets added six more insurance runs the rest of the way with
Brittany Allison's three run home run in the seventh the big blow.
Game two proved to be tougher going as WVSU fell behind 3-0 after three innings.
"They never faltered," Best said of falling behind early. "Which is great to see."
But the Yellow Jackets rallied to score five times in the fourth to pick up a 5-3 win.
Shian Meeks belted a two - run double to give WVSU the lead.
"Against a strong pitcher you have to be aggressively smart, which we did well today," Best said. "Timely hitting came when we needed it in both games."
Emily Moore came on in relief and allowed just one hit in four innings to preserve the victory.
WVSU now heads to Concord for a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader.
