Yellow Jackets Win, Move Into Third Place
Yellow Jackets Win, Move Into Third Place
The Yellow Jacket women led from beginning to end Wednesday night in defeating visiting Concord 90-68.

The victory avenged an 87-76 overtime loss at Concord way back on December 2.

In that overtime period WVSU hit just 14.3 percent of its shots while the Mountain Lions sank a scorching 62.6 percent.

WVSU players made sure there was no need for an overtime in this meeting. The Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead, went up by 11 midway through the first quarter and led by 21 after the third period in dominating the contest.

Offensive rebounding and tight defense proved to be the keys as the Jackets pulled down 25 offensive boards compared to the Mountain Lions 12. Throw in a six-turnover advantage and WVSU ended up with 23 more shots on the night.

"I am so proud of our team effort tonight," WVSU Head Coach Charles Marshall said. "They played their hearts out."

Seniors Jasmine Davis and Aurreeshae Hines led the way in their final home game.

Davis finished with 21 points, five rebounds, and blocked four shots. Hines had 16 points, six assists, and four rebounds.

"I am extremely happy for our two seniors to win in their last game in the Walker Convocation Center," Marshall said.

Wednesday's win also helped in the standings.

Coupled with West Liberty's 88-80 loss to Notre Dame the Yellow Jackets are now alone in third place with one game left in the regular season.

WVSU still needs to win at the University of Charleston Saturday to clinch third. West Liberty hosts Wheeling Jesuit and if the Hilltoppers finish in a tie with the Yellow Jackets they get third based on the tiebreaker.

The advantage to being the third seed in next week's Mountain East Conference tournament beginning Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center is being on the opposite side of the draw from seventh ranked Glenville State which is 26-1 overall and 21-0 in conference play.

Beside Davis and Hines three other Yellow Jackets hit double figure scoring Wednesday.

Amari Grace added 15 points, and Jordan Miller and Alexandra Jackson 10 each. Jackson had 10 assists and Anna Ross pulled down 11 rebounds.

In the men's game WVSU dropped a hard fought contest 95-91 to visiting Concord.

The score was tied at 91-91 with 55 seconds remaining but four Mountain Lion free throws ended up making the difference.

Pat Johnson-Agwu led the Yellow Jackets with 29 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out with 1:25 to play.

Robert Fomby added 18 points and Glen Abram 16.

WVSU wraps up its regular season at 4 p.m. Saturday at Charleston.
