Weekend Roundup: Softball Upsets #16 West Chester
    The WVSU softball team upset nationally ranked West Chester 10-6 to close out the weekend Sunday at the February Freeze Tournament in Myrtle Beach.

    "The girls came together from the start," WVSU Head Coach Mattie Best said."Kayleigh Thompson was clutch early."

    The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Thompson drew a leadoff walk and came around later to score on a single to left off the bat of Brittany Allison.

       WVSU added four more runs in the second with Thompson's bases loaded triple the big blow.

      "Brittany and Emily Moore both made big contributions," Best noted.

        After the #16 Rams pulled to within 5-3 the Jackets added a single run in the third and four more in the fourth to secure the victory.

       Allison accounted for the run in the third with a solo shot and freshman Moore belted a three-run home run in the fourth.

       Junior Emily Thompson went the distance in the circle to improve to 2-2 on the season.

      "They played with fire throughout and executed the game plan," said Best.

     The Yellow Jackets moved to 5-4 on the season. They travel to Parkersburg Saturday for a doubleheader against Ohio Valley starting at 1 p.m. and then return to Institute Sunday for their home opener at 1 p.m. against the Fighting Scots.

       Also over the MEC champion WVSU women's tennis team split a pair of matches.

       The Yellow Jackets defeated visiting defending Great Midwest Conference champions Davis & Elkins 9-0 Saturday and then dropped a hard fought 6-3 decision to Bellarmine in a match played in Ashland, Kentucky.

        Sunday Laura Isbey, Kierstin Hensley, and Nina Dillwald each earned a a singles victory with Dillwald's match lasting just over three hours and ending with an 8-6 win in a third set tie-breaker.

       WVSU will host Salem this Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Tennis Indoor Center in Charleston.

        It was the first loss for the Jackets who are now 12-1.
      
        In men's tennis action the Yellow Jackets opened their spring season with an 8-1 loss to defending Great Midwest Conference champion Davis & Elkins

        The Jackets dropped a couple of three-setters and Ethan Cross and Zack Fraley accounted for the Yellow Jackets' lone point with an 8-6 win at third doubles.

        The men host Salem at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Tennis Indoor Center in Charleston.
