Jacket Women Find Shooting Touch, Get Big Win on Senior Day
The WVSU women's basketball team came into Saturday's Senior Day contest in a tie with visiting opponent Wheeling Jesuit for fourth place in the Mountain East Conference standings.

In other words it was a great time to play a great game.
.
The Yellow Jackets could not have responded better.

After a back-and-forth first quarter that ended in a 21-21 tie WVSU gradually built a 17 point lead late in the third quarter and then held of a late Cardinal rally to earn an 83-73 win.

"It was the best game we have played all season as a team," WVSU Head Coach Charles Marshall said. "I am very happy for our seniors for getting a win on their day."

The Yellow Jackets hit a season-high 57.6 percent from the floor and 57.9 percent from behind the 3-point line on the way to the victory.

It was only the third time all year they had hit the 50 percent mark.

WVSU used that hot shooting take an eight point halftime lead and then opened the second half with a 13-4 run to swell that lead to 17.

Freshman Lyrin Hatcher played a big role in that run with eight points, three rebounds, and a pair of steals.

But when Wheeling fought back in the fourth period seniors Aurreeshae Hines and Jasmine Davis took control.

The Cardinals pulled to within eight points twice in the period. The first time Hines hit a 3-pointer and the second time Davis drove for a lay-up.

The visitors would never get any closer.

Hines finished with 17 points, Davis with 15, and Hatcher with 14.

Next up the Jackets travel to Shepherd Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.

                                                                   ..............................................................................
In the nightcap the WVSU men dropped a hard fought 81-73 decision to Wheeling Jesuit fighting back from a 16-point deficit to pull within six points in the closing minutes.

Jeremiah Moore led the Yellow Jackets with 24 points while Pat Johnson-Agwu added 15.

The Jackets play at Shepherd at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
