The Yellow Jackets held off every challenge visiting Chowan threw at them Sunday.
With the scored tied and just 10 seconds to play WVSU senior
Pat Johnson-Agwu was determined to make sure that effort was not wasted.
He took the inbounds pass in front of the Yellow Jacket bench and immediately made a move toward the lane. Cutting across the lane from the left of the free throw line toward the right side of the bucket he got a step on the man guarding him and gently lifted the ball toward the basket as the defender pushed him from the left side.
The shot fell with one second remaining and Johnson-Agwu sank the free throw to give WVSU a 95-92 win.
"Today was a great team win," WVSU Head Coach
Bryan Poore said. "I was really pleased with our practices the last couple of days, we are coming along as a team and figuring out how to close out games."
As tight as the final five minutes were the Yellow Jackets dominated most of the day.
Chowan held one lead at 17-16 midway through the first half before WVSU closed the period on a 33-16 run for a 49-33 advantage at the break.
The Hawks showed why the came into the day with an 8-0 record by using a pair of 12-2 runs in the second half to climb back into the game.
The first one started at the 18:09 mark and changed the margin from 55-36 to 57-48 with 15:59 to go.
The second began after a Johnson-Agwu bucket had given WVSU a 10-point lead at 84-74 and ended up with 2:36 to play and the score knotted at 86-86.
Glen Abram answered with a short jumper a few seconds later the
Ernest Jenkins hit a pair of free throws and Johnson-Agwu one to move the margin back to five.
Chowan hit three free throws to make the score 91-89. Abram then made one-of-two from the charity stripe to make the score 92-89 with 21 seconds showing.
The Hawks refused to go away though and hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds to go to tie things up at 92-92.
That set the stage for Johnson-Agwu to win the game.
"I thought we did a good job getting the ball to the right people down the stretch," Poore said. "Any time you beat a team that is 8-0 is a good win, hopefully we can come back after break and build on this one."
Johnson-Agwu finished with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Abram wound up with 20 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Augustus "Gus" Stone added 18 points and Jenkins 16 for WVSU.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, January 2, when they host Ohio Dominican at 7:30 p.m.
