Yellow Jacket Women Use Big Second Quarter to Earn Win
The WVSU women fell behind visiting Urbana 30-20 early in the second quarter of Saturday afternoon's contest at the Walker Convocation Center.

But over the next five minutes of that period the Yellow Jackets outscored the visitors 23-5 to pull out to a 43-35 lead and never looked back on the way to picking up a 87-74 win.

"Our defensive intensity led us to being more effective on the offensive end," WVSU Head Coach Charles Marshall said, "and we had a great effort crashing the boards on the offensive end."

WVSU led 50-39 at halftime after taking that vital second quarter 30-14.

The Blue Knights were on fire when the game started hitting 58.8 percent from the floor in the first quarter.

But just as the visitors cooled off WVSU got hot hitting 55 percent in the second period.

The Jackets won the battle on the boards out-rebounding Urbana 44-33 and outscoring the visitors 22-9 on second chance opportunities. Meanwhile the defense was forcing 19 turnovers, finishing with 23 points off of those turnovers.

Senior Jasmine Davis paced the Yellow Jackets with a 20 point, 12 rebound effort while four others hit double-figures in scoring.

"Jasmine Davis came up with another big game on both ends of the floor," Marshall said.

Amari Grace finished with 17, Aurreshae Hines with 15, Jordan Miller 11, and Alexandra Jackson 10 points and seven assists.

"Alex did a great job of running the offense, finding the open shooters," Marshall said.

The outcome moves the Yellow Jackets into a tie for third place in the standings with four weeks to go in the regular season.
