Yellow Jackets Roll to 98-88 Win Over Notre Dame

The Yellow Jackets looked like they were in trouble in the opening minutes of Wednesday night's game against visiting Notre Dame College.

Well the first 1:14 to be exact. The Falcons jumped out to a 6-0 lead but after that it was all Jackets as they rolled to a 98-88 win that was not as close as the 10-point final margin makes it seem.

WVSU players hit a scorching 61.1 percent from the floor in the first half including 9-of-15, 60 percent, from 3-point range and for good measure were a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line to completely overwhelm the visitors.

The Yellow Jackets steadily pulled away and took a 58-35 lead into halftime.

Sophomore Ernest Jenkins was particularly hot sinking 5-of-6 from 3-point range in the half finishing with 19 points.

"I thought the first half was possibly the best we have played," WVSU Head Coach Bryan Poore said. "We were on the edge and creating offense out of defense."

While they could not match the first half shooting exhibition one Jacket after another came up with a bucket when it was most needed to keep the visitors from picking up any momentum after the break.

"The second half we relaxed and didn't play with the same sense of urgency," Poore said. "We are still learning how to close games out but it was good to get back on the winning side."

WVSU moves to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

The Falcons did manage to make things interesting down the stretch pulling within seven at 92-85 and had possession of the ball.

A Yellow Jacket steal by Robert Fomby followed by his two free throws with 59 seconds to play ended the short-lived threat though.

Jenkins led a balanced WVSU attack that saw five player hit for double-figure points.

He ended up with 21, Pat Johnson-Agwu added 20, Jeremiah Moore 15, Langston Cooke 12 along with 9 assists, and Isaiah Noel 10 points. Fomby finished with 8 points and 12 rebounds.

In the night's first game the WVSU women's team hit just 21.3 percent from the floor in the first half to fall behind by 21 early but battled their way back to within four points in the second half before falling 84-77 to Notre Dame.

Jasmine Davis led the WVSU effort with 22 points, eight blocked shots, and five rebounds. Jordan Miller added 12, Michael Everhart and Kim Richburg 11, and Aurreshae Hines 10.
