William is an active member of WVSU Greater Williamsburg Alumni Chapter. While at WVSU Bill was a two-sport athlete in football and baseball, from 1968-72. After graduation from “State”, Tose’ returned to Williamsburg and immediately got involved in youth programs. Not only was he a teacher and coach, but he was an outstanding recruiter for his alma mater. Among those he encouraged to attend “State” are Dwayne “Scooter” Freeman, Dwight Street and Edgar Randall, all of whom have been inducted into the WVSU Sports Hall of Fame. At one time Coach Tose’ drove six players to Institute. He has always been a loyal supporter WVSU and has sent many athletes to our university.
Coaching was in William’s blood and he excelled in his chosen profession. Tose’ started coaching basketball in middle schools and worked his way up to the college level. He coached three lottery picks in the NBA, Allen Iverson, Alonzo Mourning and Joe Smith, along with other NBA and NFL players; such as Brian Randall, son of WVS (University) Hall of Famer, Edgar Randall. William’s last coaching position was at the Apprentice School in Virginia, where his teams won three AAU National Championships and two Small College National Championships, in seven seasons. Coach Tose’s teams were ranked in the top 10 out of 12 seasons and his teams earned 60 single game season and career records.
His total overall record was 940 wins out of 1,437 games; twenty of his students were named USCAA All Americans; his teams won two national collegiate championships and he coached six All-State college division players. in which 3 were WVSU Sports Hall of Famers
Bill has been recognized for his many accomplishments over the years such as; Small College Coach of the Year, USCAA National Coach of the Year for 2 consecutive years and Man of the Year by the Williamsburg Men’s Club. He also received the President’s Award and Board of Directors’ Award from the Peninsula Sports Club.
William graduated from Bruton Heights High School, West Virginia State University and Old Dominion University Master’s Program in Norfolk, VA. After 38 years of service and teaching with the Williamsburg-James County System, Bill retired this summer. He and his wife, former Gail Fowler, are the proud parents of two sons, William, Jr. and Ryan.
Bill’s legacy is his commitment to helping students become good citizens and the best athletes possible.
