Lipscomb, a 1975 State graduate, was captain of the Yellow Jacket track team as a freshman and a member of four WVC championship track teams. He made all-conference four times and set conference records in sprints including the 440 yard dash. Lipscomb still lives in Institute and has served as an assistant coach for the school's track team..
