In football, Nicholson was a first team WVIAC All-Conference guard in 1967, co-captain from 1966-67 and captain from 1967-68. He was a four-year letterman, linebacker, guard, special teams and kicker.

A Pittsburgh native, Nicholson combined his love of football with his desire to mentor at-risk youth in the Pittsburgh public schools. He is a professor of education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
