Wilbert Goff was born in Leslie, WV, third child of the late Samuel and Florence Goff. He attended Bolling and Crichton High Schools and became the first African American student to participate in integrated sports in Greenbrier County, earning All State honors in football and basketball.
Hall of Famer, Wesley Lynch recruited Wilbert to play for WVSC (University) in 1959, where he became a stand out hitter and pitcher on Coach Grant Gray’s baseball team. He had a career 15-4 record, ERA of 2.38, double digit strikeouts and pitching a perfect game. His passion for baseball resulted in Major League tryouts with the Milwaukee Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Wilbert also lettered 2 years as the starting quarterback under Coach Chester Burris’s football team. He was known for his outstanding passes which contributed to the success of the WVSC (University) football team.
Wilbert was among the first graduating class from the Federal City College in Washington, D.C., graduating with honors in 1970.
He has received many honors as a catcher in the American Softball Association Major Division in the Washington, D.C. Metro area, including the Greater Metropolitan Washington Fast Pitch Hall of Fame Commissioner’s Outstanding Male Award in 1978.
After 40 years with the Washington, D.C Board of Parole, Wilbert and his wife are very much involved in their church. They are the proud parents of one daughter, Karen and love spending time with granddaughter Antoinette.
