Richard L. (Dick) Dunlap was born on August 2, 1941 in Dunbar, WV to Richard H. and Thelma Dunlap. He graduated from Dunbar High School 1959 where he participated in football and was a member of 3 State Championship Track teams.

Dick graduated from “State” in 1965 with a B.S. Degree in Health & Physical Education and Social Studies. He went on to teach at South Charleston High School and was Head Track & Field Coach for 16 years as well as coaching football, basketball and cross country. After earning his M.S. Degree and Administrative Certificate, he served as Assistant Principal at Dunbar Junior High School until his retirement in 1997.

For the last 17 years Dick has continued his passion for track by being a volunteer hurdle coach for Winfield High School’s Track & Field teams. He has played a significant role in 7 Boys’ State Championship teams, 6 Girls’ State Championship teams, had 15 individual state champions and 7 shuttle hurdle relay championships, where currently 2 state hurdle records are held. According to milesplit.com, in 2011 the Winfield High School Boys’ 110 Meter Shuttle Hurdle Relay team had the best time in the United States. Dick has also been a volunteer coach for 12 years at the University of South Carolina’s Track Camps, under the leadership of Olympic Assistant Coach, Curtis Frye.

In addition to having a “one track mind”, Dick enjoys farming and spending time with his friends and family. He has been married to his high school sweetheart Joanna for 52 years, who also graduated from “State” in 1969.
