During Gough's collegiate career as quarterback for the Yellow Jackets, the team had consistently winning records incurring only two losses and two ties. Following his graduation from State in 1925, he earned a master's degree at West Virginia University.

In 1954, he was one of two black teachers selected to integrate the staff of Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston.
