While at State, Peters lettered in football and baseball and also began a career as an official. He was the only official to attain, and maintain, the superior rating for 18 consecutive years in football, basketball and baseball.
Peters was the first black to hold the position of Commissioner of Finance and Administration for the State of West Virginia. He also served for 11 years as vice president for business affairs at Marshall University.
