Smith was honored posthumously. A 1937 graduate, he earlier this year was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
Smith is best remembered for his influence on the career of the late baseball legend Jackie Robinson, having recommended Robinson to the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey.
Smith also was noted as a writer for the Pittsburgh Courier and Chicago Black American newspapers.
