John D. Thurman

John is the seventh child of L. V. Thurman and Della L. (Garner) Thurman of Pocahontas, Mississippi.  He attended Sumner Hill High School in Clinton, MS.  John excelled in football and received honors for first team all conference where he lead the team in scoring.

 

John joined the U. S. Navy in 1976 and held the rank of Third Class Petty Officer in the Aviation field and received an honorable discharge in 1982.  John served three years active duty and two years of active reserve and one year inactive reserve.

 

John attended West Virginia State College from 1982-84 where he participated in track and football.  He assisted in leading the track team to conference championships in 1982 and 1983.  John was the conference champion in the 200 meter dash and the 100 meter dash, and also ran first leg on both the 4x100 meter relay and 800 meter relay, where WVSC won both Conference relays.  John participated in the NAIA College Track and Field Championship and was ranked in the top ten in the nation in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash at Charleston, West Virginia.
