The first black to serve as senior and chief resident in general surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Christian, who was graduated from State in 1950, played end on the Yellow Jackets football team, which won the CIAA championship in 1948. He also was on the basketball and track teams.
After receiving a master's degree from West Virginia University, Christian returned to State where he was an assistant professor of biology and assistant coach in football, basketball and baseball.
