OUTSTANDING ATHLETE AWARD

 

Herbert Benjamin “Chilly” Thompson was born October 25, 1939 in Washington, DC. He attended Paul Lawrence High School where he lettered in tennis and basketball. Herbert led his basketball team to the Metropolitan-Area High School Championship in his senior year. He also was the number one player on the tennis team. “Chilly” overcame paralysis early in his life but, made a remarkable recovery which reflected in his drive to succeed in all his endeavors.

He enrolled at WVSC (University) and became the second leading scorer behind All –American “Bill” LeFevre. Not only was “Chilly” an excellent athlete but, was chosen as President of his Freshman Class, Vice President of the Men’s Senate, member of the Student Council, Chairman of the Social Committee and Cadet Captain of the Advanced ROTC program.

Herbert graduated from WVSC (University) with his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. He was employed as a Mathematical/Systems Analyst at Goddard Space Flight Center, Director of Manpower Information at United Planning Organization and a Program Analyst/Senior Appeals Examiner for the District of Columbia Government, which he retired from in 1991. “Chilly” was one of the first officers in the National “W” Club and most active in writing the by-laws.

Herbert “Chilly” Thompson was the loving father of two daughters, Traci and Kela and had one grandson, Trey.

He will always be remembered for his dedication to the success of his Alma Mater.         

“Chilly” passed away on September 14, 2003.
