Thurman was a four-year letterman in both track and basketball for State. In 1980 and 1981, he was team captain for both the basketball and track teams. In track, Thurman won the WVIAC championship in high jump in 1981. In addition, he was honorable mention on the 1980-1981 WVIAC basketball team.
