Member, First WVSC team to win WVIAC
Member, Undefeated Track Championship
Set School Record in 440, 880, and Mile Relays
Dr. Lynn Smith, a1958 graduate of Spingarn High School in Washington, DC, entered West Virginia State College (WVSC) to pursue a career in printing.
He joined the track team as a freshman and became a member of the mile relay team that placed first and second in every meet that year. That consistency helped the team go undefeated during the regular season and to become the fi rst WVSC team to win a WVIAC Championship. At that meet, the mile relay finished second.
Upon graduation in 1962, he became a teacher at Cranston High School East, in
Cranston, Rhode Island. In addition to teaching, he became the school’s asst. varsity
wrestling coach and its junior varsity coach. During a two year stint, those teams
won two Conference and State Championships, a New England Championship, and
a Conference JV Championship.
Dr. Smith has served twenty-five years in senior staff positions in public education in Rhode Island and North Carolina; retiring as Executive Director, Auxiliary Services, Durham, NC.
He has been owner-operator of a staffi ng and training company, providing HR services to major New England corporations and institutions.
Currently, Dr. Smith is president of the Raleigh-Durham Chapter of the WVSU Alumni Association and senior board member of the Durham Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
Dr. Smith is married to Daphne Graves-Smith, a Fayetteville, NC native and graduate of Johnson C. Smith University. They are the proud parents of two children, Michael and Lisa, and six grandchildren.
