The late Dr. Hawkins first taught at State from 1932 to 1935 and returned to the Institute campus in 1945 as chairman of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Safety and director of athletics. In 1954-55, Hawkins oversaw the integration of the school's coaching and athletic teams.
