Bryan Poore will be starting his 12th year as Head Basketball Coach at West Virginia State University. He was born in Beckley to his parents David and Martha but, Bryan, his brother Mark and his sister Susie called Winfield home. Bryan graduated from WVSC (University) in 1988 where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He later went on to obtain his Master’s from Marshall University in 1994.
Coach Poore began his coaching career as the Assistant Basketball Coach at Hurricane High School in 1988. He was then offered the position of Assistant Basketball Coach with the University of Charleston in1990. While the head coach of UC took a one year sabbatical, Bryan was then appointed as Interim Head Coach in 1995 and served through 1996.
After leaving the University of Charleston, Bryan accepted the position as the Associate Head Coach at Marshall University from 1996-1999. He then returned to Institute in the spring of 1999 to serve as the Head Basketball Coach of his Alma Mater, “State”. Coach Poore has an overall career coaching record of 235-112.
In his spare time, Bryan enjoys playing golf, jogging and watching NASCAR events. He and his wife Jennifer are blessed with two beautiful children, son Trevor and daughter Anna. All of Bryan’s family can be seen at home games and most away games cheering on the WVSU “Yellow Jackets”.
