Holden, a native of Athens, Ga., was active in field hockey, gymnastics, basketball, softball, volleyball and tennis while attending State. She was a member of State's championship women's tennis team in 1938.

While coaching track in Gary, Ind., two of Holden's athletes, Barbara Jones and Mabel Landry, won medals as members of the United States Olympic track teams in 1952 and 1956.
