Al Vance was born in Holden, West Virginia on June 22, 1953 and is the third son of four boys of Kelso and Rosie Vance. He graduated from Logan High School 1971 where he excelled in basketball and baseball. Al was the second leading scorer in basketball and leading hitter on the baseball team.
The late great Coach Chester Burris recruited Al to play basketball at “State”. He led the team in scoring and steals, was second in assists in 1972 and 1973. Al was blessed to have played with an outstanding team who lost in the final game of the regular season at Fairmont 64-62 that decided the number one team in the WVIAC. “State” was ranked nationally in 1973 going undefeated at home while finishing the season with 21 wins and 11 losses (16-5 record in the WVIAC).
Al graduated from “State” with a 3.0 grade point average and earned his B.S. in Agricultural Technology in 1975. After 37 years of service, Al retired from Union Carbide and Dow Chemical Company in 2011. He served on two National Fire Protection Association standard technical writing committees and assisted in the development of fire safety codes to help protect people, property and the environment.
Al and his wife Margretta (Hogue) reside in Missouri City, Texas. They were blessed with two children, Kimberly and Greg (Alfred II). His greatest joy is watching his grandchildren, Jordan and Kennedy play sports and being an active member of the Fort Bend Church.
