Albert “Chubby” Hughes is the son of Lucinda “Boots” Hughes and the late Albert J. Hughes, Sr. During his high school career, he was a 3 year, four sports star in baseball, basketball, football and track. “Chubby” was a three-time All-State selection in baseball and was significant in leading his team to the State Championship as well, as runner-up in basketball. He was recognized by his class as “Outstanding Male Athlete”.
Upon graduation from high school, he was drafted by the Houston Astros professional baseball organization. He chose however, to sign and play for Marshall University on a baseball/basketball scholarship. He transferred to West Virginia State College in 1970 to continue his education and sports endeavors. He went on to become an All-Conference WVIAC selection as a second base utility player. “Chubby” was also a letterman for the “Yellow Jackets” basketball team. He pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Tau Chapter WV State. Albert graduated in 1973, with a BA in Political Science and Economics. He worked as a lab analyst for Monsanto BASF and Pittsburgh Paints performing chemical analysis. He also had ten years with the West Virginia Regional Jail Authority.
Currently, Albert resides in Beckley, WV and is a member of the John Scott Lodge #1070 of the IBPOE of the World, Inc. He has also been honored with the induction into the Woodrow Wilson Sports Hall of Fame. Albert has two daughters and five grandchildren. He also has one sister, Pamela, an educator and graduate of WVSU and one brother Dr. Timothy Hughes, DDS., graduate of Marshall University and WVU Dental School.
